Journey with ‘Toastmasters International’

Toastmasters International (TI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in the USA. The organization aims at empowering individuals to become better communicators and leaders. It has a membership base of approximately 360,000 people and across 143 countries in the entire world.

My journey with Toastmasters has been very amusing. When I look back at myself now, I see Toastmasters shaping my personality in a very confident way.

I started as a member of the Infosys Pune Toastmasters Club (IPTMC) in the year 2003. Soon after 2 months, I became the associate Public Relations Manager of the club. From there on, in the next 2 years, I took charge of IPTMC as the club president.

As a club president, I had the most important task to form my Executive Council, since all the veterans of the club left the same year. During my reign as the Club President, the club received Select Distinguished award and the best corporate club award in the presence of TI director, Nagaraja Rao. The club also witnessed its completion of 10 years and the 400the meet, which was celebrated in the entire Infosys Pune Development Center(DC) among 40,000 employees by organizing PR campaigns, contests and a DC level meet. The club also organized the biggest ever Officers Training Program where 350 officers from Maharashtra and Goa (Southern India parts) were trained. During this training, my club also got an opportunity to host the runner-up of the World Champion of Public Speaking – Aditya Maheshwaran.

In below images, you can see the club celebrating 400th Meet, a club Ex-Comm picture with A. Maheshwaran, and the moment when N. Rao presented the “Best corporate club award” to the club (myself, Infosys Pune head R. Malviya and N. Rao from left to right) respectively:

As a member of TI fraternity, I achieved the Triple Crown Achievers Award from Toastmasters for completing 3 educational goals in a year. I have been awarded the ‘Advance Leader Bronze’ and ‘Advance Communicator Bronze’ from TI.

I also participated in the annual World Championship/ International Public Speaking Contest, where speakers from across the world participate for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. It starts at the club level and I was able to reach the 3rd qualifier round where entire Southern India fights to qualify for further rounds. I also participated in the annual evaluation contest and qualified for the 3rd level of thw competition.

Toastmasters has amazing concepts such as, Constructive Criticism and Mentorship which helped me transform not only at my club/ Toastmasters level but also at my professional and personal level at large. I strongly believe in Toastmasters since it has helped me become more strong and confident.
